Lit Night

Last night was Mckinney's art lit night! From 5:30 - 7:00.  At 5:30- 6:00, everybody enjoyed some delicious Little Ceaser's Pizza. As soon as you were done eating, and as long as you went to at least 3 stations, and got at least 3 stickers, you could get a free book! Everybody picked great poems, book choices, and other things to read. Nevertheless, everything was free (unless of course you were interested in buying books at the book fair) Which is still open! To see how much fun we all really had, stay tuned!

Reminder-

Next Thursday (October 30) is Literacy Night at McKinney!  As 6th Graders, we are responsible for creating a reading chair.  Not just any reading chair- but a reading chair to amaze people, to draw them in, make them sit, and get them to read!

What you need to bring ASAP:
Bring in materials to decorate our chair!  We need ribbons, sticks, wrapping paper, glitter, cardboard, tinsel, pipe cleaners, cotton balls, and any other art or craft supplies-  you name it, we need it!

What you need to do:
Over the next week, devote some of your hard earned recess to building a Chair to end all Chairs!  (If you want to... it's a volunteer opportunity only for the most awesome of chair-building enthusiasts.)

What else you need to do:
Choose something to read in our fantastic reading chair next Thursday, and... COME TO LITERACY NIGHT!!!
Field Trip

We visited Clean Water Services today.  We got a great understanding of how our water gets processed and reused.  It was a bit rainy, but it's all about water anyway, right?

Boatbuilding

Mr. Bayer’s and Mrs. Lawson’s class are currently experiencing a boat-building project that will include some/all of the following:
  • ·       Power tools
  • ·       Lessons on the water cycle
  • ·       Boat design
  • ·       Building the boat
  • ·       Learning about the boat
  • ·       Using the boat
  • ·       Art
  • ·       Tin foil
  • ·       Wood
  • ·       Woodworking classes

This is a true experience for both classes because their students are the first ones in their school to experience this 10 week, hard working project to create, design, and test this 100% student-made boat.

Alien Worlds

This assignment “alien worlds” is challenging Mr. Bayer’s 6th grade class to use their knowledge of latitude and longitude with a little geographic terms to create their own alien world map. Some of the requirements for this project are 4 continents, 3 labeled landforms, and 2 labeled oceans! Some of the main reasons this class is doing this assignment is so the class can get more efficient at latitude and longitude, and so the kids can be more familiar with their creative side.

-CH
Welcome to Mr. Bayer's 6th grade class blog!  This blog will consist of both teacher and student posts to share what we are doing in our class.

Some things we've been working on lately:

  • Designing an alien planet that includes land forms and a system of latitude and longitude

  • Reading Esperanza Rising and learning more about the Braceros Movement and the National Farmworkers Association
  • Building a boat... yes, a boat!

  • Exploring ways to communicate data (charts and graphs)
  • Manipulating area and perimeter of shapes
  • Learning about the water cycle
